Bamboo Woodlot Development in Ghana for Economic and Environmental Sustainability
Overview: This project explores the feasibility and scalability of establishing bamboo woodlots across Ghana as a dual-purpose resource — generating sustainable economic activity while delivering measurable environmental benefits including carbon sequestration and soil stabilisation.
Motivation
Ghana faces twin challenges of deforestation and rural unemployment. Bamboo’s rapid growth cycle (harvestable within 3–5 years vs. 20+ for hardwood), versatility across industries, and climate resilience make it a compelling strategic resource for Ghana’s green economy transition.
Policy impact
Aligns with the Forestry Commission of Ghana’s reforestation targets, national SDG commitments, and climate change mitigation policies — while creating tangible rural employment through bamboo furniture, construction materials, charcoal, paper, and handicraft value chains.
